AltusGroup member Metromont manufactured 745,000-square-foot Martin Army Community Hospital exterior panels
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (February 8, 2016) – Metromont Corporation, one of AltusGroup’s 20 innovation-focused North American precast members, manufactured CarbonCast High Performance Insulated Wall Panels for the Martin Army Hospital contributing to the energy savings needed to receive a LEED Gold Certification. Metromont manufactured the exterior walls and teamed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to engineer them.
LEED Gold certifications are awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council to facilities that minimize impact on the environment and promote energy efficiency.
The 745,000-square-foot hospital located at the Fort Benning Army Base in Columbus, Ga., used 9” thick CarbonCast High Performance Insulated Wall Panels for the exterior. The precast sandwich panel consists 3” thick interior and exterior concrete wythes with 3” of EPS insulation between them.
The continuous insulation in the CarbonCast panels was enabled by C-GRID carbon fiber wythe connectors. The walls were designed to deliver an R-value of R-12 that exceeds code by 50% and eliminated the need for batt or other insulation. The negligible thermal conductivity of the C-GRID carbon fiber connectors virtually eliminates the possibility of spurious thermal transfer through the panel, creating highly thermally efficient panel that can reduce HVAC system energy use and provide substantial long-term energy savings to heat and cool buildings.
CarbonCast wall panels can also weigh less than conventional precast wall systems, helping to reduce embodied energy by using less cement and other raw materials, and less energy to produce, ship and erect.
