CarbonCast insulated architectural cladding from AltusGroup is an insulated, sandwich-type wall panel with inner and outer concrete wythes of 1.75+ inches thick each. The wythes envelope a layer of continuous insulation of 2 inches or more to meet ASHRAE 90.1 2007 requirements.

In 2003 members of AltusGroup®, Inc., a partnership of precast firms, transformed concrete enclosure systems by introducing CarbonCast High Performance Insulated Wall Panels. The new walls offered thin and lightweight insulated sandwich walls at low costs, making thermally efficient precast more affordable for low-rise vertical panel applications.

AltusGroup (Bethlehem, Pa., USA) announced on Nov. 15 that its CarbonCast High Performance Insulated Wall Panels have received International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) acceptance criteria for the C-GRID carbon fiber grid truss system used to connect the inner and outer wythes of the precast concrete wall panels. The official criteria is called AC422 — Proposed Acceptance Criteria For Semicontinuous Fiber-Reinforced Grid Connectors Used In Combination With Rigid Insulation In Concrete Sandwich Panel Construction.

Used in a wide array of goods from laptops and tennis rackets to motorcycles, carbon fiber has seen it’s global market increase annually by 18 percent over the last two decades. Demand shows no sign of abating. It is projected to grow 9.8 percent annually during the next five years with some industry categories forecasting annual growth rates of nearly 30 percent. By 2014, the market for industrial aerospace and sporting goods carbon fiber is expected to be a $19 billion industry. However the material’s increasing use in new concrete construction could have the biggest impact.
