High Performance Building Code Requirements for Sustainability
Current sustainability standards in new building construction primarily address energy efficiency, recycling and reuse strategies. “The High Performance Building Code Requirements for Sustainability” sample ordinance just issued by the Portland Cement Association (PCA) argues that factors like life safety, property protection, durability and disaster recovery should have equal importance.
“We need to make the buildings better—they must be more durable and disaster resistant,” says Stephen S. Szoke, director of codes and standards for PCA. “Are buildings still green if you have to replace them after a disaster or in less than 50 years?”
