Chomarat N.A., a founding member of AltusGroup, was granted membership to Oak Ridge Carbon Fiber Composites Consortium in October 2011.
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has a 40-year history in research, development, demonstration and deployment of fiber-reinforced composite materials. For the past decade, ORNL has led the conception, planning, and execution of The Department of Energy low-cost carbon fiber initiative in order to significantly contribute to the nation’s goals of energy independence.
In addition to networking opportunities, Chomarat’s membership benefits also include participation in curricula development for Roane State Community College’s Advanced Materials Training and Education Center. ORNL’s briefings on progress and funding for research will help accelerate the full scale commercialization of low cost carbon fiber composites crucial to growth in key markets such as automotive, wind energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, and industrial applications.
ORNL recently received a $35 million award from DOE to design, construct, and operate the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility, which will include a pilot plant capable of producing up to 25 tons per year of new carbon fiber materials from several different precursors. The facility currently under construction is scheduled to begin operations by fall 2012.
